James Herald Obituary

James Edward Herald, 92, of Indianapolis, passed away at 4:07 p.m. July 12, 2019, at Lakeview Manor.

James was born on November 14, 1926, in London, Kentucky, the son of Sam and Nanny (Winn) Herald.  He married Gloria Hoagland on June 10, 2006, in Indianapolis.  She survives.

He is also survived by six daughters- Kathy (Ray) Mullins of Plainfield, Indiana, Betty Goodwin of Danville, Indiana, Any (Herman) Hargrave of Jacksonville, Florida, Corina (Vance) Eilert of Indianapolis, Indiana, Patricia Walker of Indianapolis, Indiana and Elaine Buckrop of Peotone, Illinois; four sons- Darrel (Sherrie) Herald of Indianapolis, Indiana, Tony Herald of Indiana, Patrick Herald of Jacksonville, Florida and Nelson (Alice) Gary of Indianapolis; special caregiver- Gloria Brown of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons- Jimmy Herald and Gary Persail, three daughters- Johnna Oakes, Joann Myers and Debbie Welch and one sister- Dora Clawson; 43 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great grandchildren; and 18 great-great-great grandchildren.

James worked in the Kentucky coal mines for several years and later as a welder for Allied Trucking.  He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946.  He was a member of West Parkview Baptist Church.  James enjoyed watching western movies, karaoke, dancing, cowboy hats and spending time with his children and grandchildren.  He also enjoyed planting his garden, sitting on the porch and enjoying his time. 

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2019, at New Crown Cemetery, in Indianapolis, with full military honors.  Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Norman F. Chance Funeral Home, 504 National Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227.  Memorials may be made to the family.  The family has entrusted the Norman F.
