Kemp Levaughn Jones Jr. passed away unexpectedly on July 19th, 2023, while leaving work at the Plainfield Correctional Facility. His family is deeply saddened by his sudden death. Kemp was born on February 17, 1972. He was 51 years old.
Kemp Levaughn Jones Jr. was born to Bettie A. Jones of Hazelhurst , MS and Kemp Levaughn Jones Sr. of Vicksburg, MS. Kemp Jr. attended the Gary Public School System, and graduated from West Side Senior High School as a part of the Class of 1990. He attended Ball State University for a period of time before joining the United States Military.
Kemp will be laid to rest with DOC Honor Guard at the Crown Hill National Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana Thursday August 10, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.
Kemp was employed with the Indiana Department of Corrections for 20 plus years. Kemp began his love of corrections with the Indiana Youth Center in Muncie. While seeking new opportunities and challenges, he was led to the Miami Correctional Facility as an Officer, which shortly promoted him to Sergeant. His next opportunity at Miami was as a Correctional Caseworker. The Security Threat Group Coordinator position became his niche, which led him to the Fusion Center downtown. At the crossroads of his career, he decided to return to Custody at the Plainfield Correctional Facility in 2010. While at the Plainfield Correctional Facility, he was an Officer, Sergeant, Mail Room Supervisor, Administrative Assistant, and ultimately, Deputy Warden’s Assistant.
Kemp is survived by his loving parents, Bettie A. Jones, Kemp L. Jones, Sr. (Bernetta). He also leaves to cherish his memories two brothers, Marcus Terrell Jones, Anthony O’Neal Jones (Nickea), and one bonus brother, Harry D. Coleman, Jr.
Besides his parents and brothers, Kemp leaves four children, Evan Mark Jones (Tara Claudette Evans), Alysia Regina Jones (Angela Phyllis Jones), Kamille Janae Jones, and Kemp LaVaughn Jones III (Timike Jones).
Kemp will be remembered for all the heart that he shared with his friends and family. He truly loved each of them- and if you knew him, you knew it.
