Marietta Pauline Johnson was born July 1, 1926, to George and Emma (Ransdell) Mann. She walked through Heaven’s Gate on June 28, 2025; just 3 days shy of her 99th birthday. She was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis and a member of the Southport High School Class of 1942.
She is preceded in death by husband Harold Kern, ex-husband Lloyd Embree, husband Charles Baker and husband David Johnson, two daughters, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include her daughter Sherry (Jimmy) Flanagan, son Harold (Yvonne) Kern, grandsons Jimmy Flanagan, Jr., Brad Flanagan, Christopher Flanagan, Edward Kern, and Richard Kern, along with numerous great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Marietta worked at RCA and P.R. Mallory until she quit to raise her family. In her later years she returned to work as a cook in the cafeteria at Burkhart Elementary School in Perry Township. After retiring she enjoyed crocheting, sewing, traveling, listening to gospel and country music, gardening, spending time with her family, and watching birds and wildlife. She will be remembered as a strong woman with a heartful of love to share.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Norman F. Chance Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 504 National Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227, on July 9, 2025, from 12-2 p.m. Interment of cremains will follow the service at New Crown Cemetery.
