Samuel "Sam" Urban Merl

Samuel “Sam” Urban Merl was born April 8, 1950, in Beech Grove, Indiana to Urban and Ruth Merl. He left this world on July 25, 2024, after battling cancer for over 4 years. He was a beloved figure whose life was characterized by his love of his family and his community.

Sam embarked on his professional journey after graduating from Beech Grove High School in 1968, followed by attending Ball State University. He also attended IUPUI, Butler University and Indiana Wesleyan University. He proudly started his career as an educator in 1972 at Beech Grove Central Elementary School and ending at Beech Grove Middle School in 2005. Sam spent the entire 33 years of his career working in his hometown.  He was truly admired by the staff, students and parents of the schools where he served.

Sam also worked as Director of Public Works after retiring Beech Grove City Schools. Sam was always happy to work and belong to community organizations.  He was a proud member of the Beech Grove Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #4167 and American Legion Post #276.

Sam’s life was rich with love and laughter.  He was always quick with a funny story or a good joke. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed his weekly luncheons with good friends.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Cynthia Merl, sisters Mary Ann Cline and Carolyn Grant –Keeler (John), children Michelle Winton (Steve), Amy Hartman Spengler, and Gregory Fox (Melissa), grandchildren Ashlyn, Kathryn, Stephanie, Jessica, Elizabeth and Erik, great-grandchildren Lillian, Waylen Samuel, Dixon and Cooper.

He leaves behind a legacy of strength, humor and unwavering dedication to his family, friends and profession.
